Imagine charging your phone while waiting for the CAT to take you home? by CitySpoon

CitySpoon is rapidly building a reputation for being not only a hub of information about the great city of Las Vegas, but also bringing you the very best of what the city has to offer.

So, when we stumble upon this great idea launched out east, we are left pondering on one tiny question: how can we get it over here? You see, it is not uncommon for many to inconveniently drain their phone battery mid-way through the day, rendering them not only lost, but cut-off from the outside world – kinda. How awesome would it be after a long night of walking around or partying, to be able to plug your phone in and juice it as you wait for the Deuce or Cat to lovingly take you where you need to be?

So far the Vitaminwater campaign has launched to positive response in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston, without word of other potential cities to get it next. Here’s hoping someone from Crispin Porter and Bogusky reads this and picks up on the no-so-subtle nudge

Big things on the horizon for Las Vegas by CitySpoon

Last post we spoke about Las Vegas being a city synonymous with fun and partying – talking about a night out our team had at a local hot spot and the fun we had. One thing we didn’t mention, however, is that Las Vegas is also a hub for start-up creativity which is quite literally bursting at the seams. Said start-ups thrive off being first to market with their creative ideas – hoping (and praying) that their idea will hit and make everyone involved wealthy. While this is a great mentality to live by, it’s very rare that things actually transpire as forecasted.

We here at CitySpoon are looking to change that perception and not be a “statistic”. We have ideas; great ones at that, ones that we can’t wait to flaunt – but not yet.  We’re developing a campaign to not only introduce ourselves to the city of Las Vegas, but also wow you and give a sense of the innovative things we have in store for you. So sit back, keep an eye on us, maybe even register here and become a “spooner”. Either way you’ll want to be around for everything – including our contest coming up in a few short weeks.

Till then…stay tuned!

A unique Saturday night in Vegas by CitySpoon

Las Vegas, Nevada; sin city if you will, one of the most heavily visited tourist cities in the United States – It’s busy, it’s hot and the name is synonymous with the “what happens here, stays here mentality”. So one could imagine that a Saturday night in this famed city of ours would come with some pretty high expectations.

This past Saturday the CitySpoon team had the chance to check out Blush boutique nightclub – or “Blush” for short – inside of the Wynn hotel; the small, subtle gem located not far down the hall and around the corner from the Wynn’s famed poker room.

On first impression the club seems dark, luminous, and rather uninviting – case in point why one should never judge a book by its cover. We approached the doormen/hosts – whom to my surprise, shockingly, all had smiles on their faces – and mentioned how we are new to Vegas and looking for a fun Saturday night (giving the normal story). They were extremely inviting and without hesitation walked us into the club, to be greeted by booming sound, a busy dance floor and an inviting bar waiting to be binged at.

As most people would do, we bee-lined to the bar to get our lubrication on – now you would think there would be a ridiculous wait, then half-assed non-attentive service from one of the bar staff, right? Wrong again. The girls were quick, friendly, attractive, made a good non-watered down drink and actually made me want to tip them (as opposed to feeling obligated to). So far, my smile was growing ear to ear by the minute – a feat not normally achieved so easily when it comes to clubs.

The night from there went on unscathed; the DJ was great, the atmosphere was fun and people were just there to party. We drank our weeks frustrations away and left near the end of the night with a good taste in our mouths and good memories to look back on.  In a city full of night life saturation, Blush stands out as a go-to place for those not looking for the huge production value of a big place, but more for those looking for a fun intimate environment to let loose with their friends.

So, if you’re interested in checking out something different on a Saturday night in Vegas, check out Blush nightclub in the Wynn hotel and make sure to ask for Noor – he will be glad to show you a solid time.

Sweet Cakes by CitySpoon

Cake rocked the house Friday at Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. If, by chance, you have been sleeping under a rock, Cosmo’s Boulevard Pool has been hosting a series of concerts. Lauren Hill, Robyn, and Mumford and Sons have all recently graced the sexy venue with their presence. Cake took their performance to a whole new level performing decades of hits including “the Distance.”

New and old fans showed up to support the “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” band. The older crowd dawned Tommy Bahama’s finest, the younger, Forever 21’s worst (see photo below). It must be stated, however, that all parties in attendance were loving the night.

City Spoon’s Erin Garza spoke with Cake Bassist Xan McCurdy prior to the show…

City Spoon: Why did it take so long to make a studio album?

Xan McCurdy: The album took a long time because we were settling into our studio situation. We all put gear into a house and tried to learn how to be studio engineers. We’re slow. We treated it like a day job but we are democratic. We let everyone’s ideas really get heard. At the end of the day, everyone felt like at least they were heard.

CS: The studio you recorded in is “green.”

XM: Yeah, it’s green. We try to offset the wreckage of diesel bus fuel and airplane fuel day after day. It’s pretty rough.

CS: What’s the most difficult part about touring?

XM: For the other guys, they have children. I don’t. They miss out on those moments. For me, I like touring. I like touring and seeing new places. It’s enjoyable. Touring has gotten better over the years. Food has gotten better! That’s the main thing. Because, when you’re on tour everyday and your food is a mystery, that get’s a little bunk.

CS: Is Cake planning on getting involved in the relief efforts of Joplin, MO.?

XM: I can’t tell you exactly what is it is but we are figuring out what we can do.

CS: What is your favorite song to play live?

XM: “Mustache Man.” I like that it’s kind of fat booty bass line and drum beat but with meat heady rock
and guitar. If I had a dream band it might be something like AC/DC meets James Brown.

CS: What’s your favorite thing about playing Vegas?

XM: It’s always interesting to just marvel at the crazy over-the-topness that’s happening. My biological mother actually lives in Las Vegas. I haven’t partied in Vegas since I was 22.

CS: You are known for having loyal fans, who are you a loyal fan of?

XM: I’m a loyal fan of a band called The Bees out of London. You should check them out.

CitySpoon – Taste of the Nation 5/19/11 by CitySpoon

The official CitySpoon website will be up and running on June 1st. What better way to kick off the site than help support No Kid Hungry in Nevada at Taste of the Nation inside Rain at the Palms. It was a wonderful even filled with great food, great chefs, mixologists, and non the less great supporters all for a great cause. One hundred percent of funds raised went to local Las Vegas beneficiaries Three Square Food Bank, Project Mana, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, and UNCE Chefs for Kids
Las Vegas is the home of some of the best restaurants in the world, and many of them were at the Palms that evening showcasing their exquisite recipes for food and cocktails in which CitySpoon will share the hottest deals and places throughout Las Vegas for the benefit of the people.
Restaurants including Alize, Island Sushi and Grill, Bradley Ogden, Union Steakhouse, Bar Masa, Roy’s, N9NE Steakhouse, TAO, NOVE Italiano, BOA Steakehouse, Nobu, LAVO, Sushi Roku, Holstein’s, Wazuzu and many more contributed and created the most mouth watering dishes I have ever been in the presence of in one area.
Above is Executive Chef Drew Terp with Bar Masa, which offers a Modern Japenese Cuisine, located in the ARIA Resort and Casino. Chef Terp had prepared Australian Kobe Beef skewers with a yuzu spice among a other flavorful dishes that included the highest grade beef you can get in the United States. Thanks Bar Masa, Delicious!
The pool outside the Palms was surrounded by aroma’s of mojitos, food trucks, and an overwhelming amount of 5 star dishes.
Inside Rain Nightclub, many other unique dishes were being created by a whole bunch of creative and hard working chefs. If I only had enough room in my stomach to try it all, trust me I would have. From dishes that I could not pronounce to red velvet mini cupcakes with cream cheese frosting as well at mini meatball sliders with fried mozzarella and pepperoncinis from Simon’s Restaurant Lounge inside Palms Place there was nothing that I would eat five of.

The Boys are Back. Hangover II. by CitySpoon

I just saw Bridesmaids last week and thought it was absolutely hysterical, like pee myself in the theater hysterical. Between the disastrous diarrhea scene to getting completely obliterated on a flight to Vegas and kicked off the plane, the ladies in Bridesmaids made me laugh until I cried. Some may even refer to it as the female version of the Hangover, I don’t know if I would necessarily say that but I did find it equally as funny. So we shall see this Thursday (5/26) when the Hangover II premiers nation wide what Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Ed Helms and Mike Tyson can bring to the big screen this go around. It’s a little unfortunate, judging from the trailer, that the stomping grounds will not be in good ol’ Sin City, however they needed to to go global which I can understand…taking it to a different level. This should make for interesting situation for the fellas. And how appropriate that it is premiering Memorial Day Weekend. Judging from the trailer there is bound to be some “ohhhhh sh**” moments.

Wicked Spoon = Wicked Awesome by CitySpoon

I usually get pretty overwhelmed at buffets because I want the food and I want all of it. However, upon my arrival at the Wicked Spoon I was certain to have a full blown panic attack. The maze of delectable salads, entrées, meats, soups, fish…and I haven’t even gotten to the desserts yet. I usually try to scope out the entire buffet first, and then make a very wise, well thought out, strict plan of execution. Why do I do this? A. Because I like to execute and make a plan for anything. B. Because I want to make sure that I get to try everything I want…and as I stated earlier, I usually want it all. and C. I like to have an order in which I eat food, ya know soup-salad-appetizer-entrée-dessert. Some people like to start with a dessert. Not me, but I don’t judge, to each their own. So, as soon as a carefully constructed my strategy I went for it. Inducing myself in a serious food coma. I started with a warm goat cheese salad, grilled asparagus salad, and watermelon with a hint of mint and cucumbers. I nibbled away vigorously and was quick to head back as though they were going to take the food away. I felt I should have prepared myself better for this marathon, and by prepare I mean grow 6 extra arms just to carry all of my food plates. I ate the most amazing corn on the cob with melted butter and some sort of grated cheese (strange, I might have to say this was one of my favorite items) I also grabbed two tacos, seafood jambalaya, pork ribs, a single serving of eggs benedict, gooey french toast with fresh blueberries and syrup, sweet delicious bacon (which I ate before I even made it back to my table), macaroni and cheese with little fried chicken wings, general tso’s chicken with fried rice (also my favorite) and some garlic gnocchi which melted in my mouth. Now, I did not write those in the order I ate them but I did eat all of them and at this point still had not made my way to the dessert section. This picture above shows the seafood jambalaya with delicious oysters I could have eaten all day. And below is a preview of what is to come in regards to the dessert section, in which further induced my food coma almost to the point of being in a complete blackout, I wasn’t sure what I was eating, but I do know it did involve some giant chocolate covered strawberries. Although I will admit I am not a huge fan of sweets and would much rather eat an extra piece of sushi or 5, these desserts could not be ignored. There was a gelato bar in which served a variety of flavors in a small glass or waffle cone depending on how much room you had left in your stomach. I helped myself to a serving of peanut butter and jelly flavored with salted peanuts. There really aren’t words to do that flavor justice, it was simply amazing and a perfect ending to my wonderful 23 dollar buffet. Hats off to the Wicked Spoon. I will be back to spoon again soon!

Spooning with Jet Tila by CitySpoon

Jet Tila is a nationally renowned chef of all styles of Asian cuisine. His passion for Asian food began at an early age. As a boy, he spent time learning the ancient traditions of classical Asian cuisine in family restaurants and at the Bangkok Market. At age 10, Jet realized his deep connection to food sprung from a deeper connection to his history; learning family traditions from his Cantonese grandmother further piqued his interest. In his early teens, Jet was making appetizers at his family’s restaurants. At 22, he was teaching cooking classes in his backyard a phenomenon that caught the attention of The Los Angeles Times.

Chef Jet’s Le Cordon Bleu education, coupled with his extensive knowledge of Asian gastronomy, have given him a wide range of ideas to draw upon and a broad framework to craft incomparable and innovative cuisine. In culinary school, Jet began to develop his style by seeking novel and inventive ways to approach Eastern ingredients with classical French technique. He has also completed an intensive program of study at the California Sushi Academy.

Chef Jet has written two cover pieces and several articles for the food section of The Los Angeles Times and has been featured in Los Angeles magazine. He has appeared on Food TV’s “The Best Of,” “Food Finds” and “The Secret Life Of”; The Learning Channel’s “No Reservations” with Chef Anthony Bourdain and “Take Home Chef”; HGTV’s “Smart Solutions” and “Weekend Entertaining”; PBS’s “Visiting With Huell Howser”; and is a frequent contributor to National Public Radio’s “Good Food” with Evan Kleiman.

Chef Jet was awarded the Los Angeles Times best recipe of the year for his Tom Yum soup and his Tom Kha Gai soup was named one of the 10 best recipes of 2000.
He holds the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Stirfry” at 1,805 pounds. Chef Jet is highly sought after to consult, teach cooking classes and cater meals; he is the Asian food consultant to the Bon Appïtit management company.

I met Chef Jet 3 years ago at an event called Taste of The Nation where he served the biggest portion in the event. I went to his restaurant Wazuzu at The Encore shortly after and I must say it’s pretty amazing. Although I never really got to share or make drinks or cocktails for Chef. I will one day find an oppurtunity to because he’s a talented chef. I’ve watched him grow in the Las Vegas community with so many different web shows, tv, Whole Foods Demonstrations and I definitely am a big Jet Fan. I would love to some day work with him on a collaboration of drinks and asian fusion or even traditional asian faire. If you’re in Vegas or visiting, go see Chef Jet at Wazuzu inside the Encore Resort and Casino!

Maybe I need to pitch a Food Network show spinoff of the “Best Thing I Ever Ate” to the “Best Thing I Ever Drank.”
Note to self: Send Jet an note regarding being a BAMF in the kitchen. Because that’s what I am!
